GST/HST (ITC) on a Vehicle Used for Business

If you are GST/HST-registered and purchase a passenger vehicle for both business and personal use, the GST/HST you can claim as an Input Tax Credit (ITC) depends on the vehicle’s business-use percentage.

For individuals and partnerships:

  • 90% or more business use: You may generally claim 100% of the eligible GST/HST as an ITC in the reporting period when the vehicle is acquired, subject to CRA rules and applicable limits.
  • More than 10% but less than 90% business use: The ITC is generally calculated using the vehicle’s Capital Cost Allowance (CCA) and the percentage of business use, rather than being claimed fully when the vehicle is purchased.
  • 10% or less business use: No ITC is generally available for the vehicle.

For passenger vehicles, CRA limits the vehicle cost that can be used for tax purposes. The applicable limits and rules may change from year to year and may differ depending on the type of vehicle, including qualifying zero-emission vehicles.

Important: These guidelines are intended for general educational purposes and must not be treated as a universal calculation method. Corporations may be subject to different ITC rules than individuals and partnerships. The actual calculation can also depend on the vehicle, ownership structure, business-use percentage, and other circumstances.

Always check the latest CRA rules, limits, and calculation methods before filing. The CRA website is the primary source for current GST/HST and income-tax requirements. We strongly recommend having the calculation reviewed by an experienced tax accountant or qualified tax professional familiar with GST/HST and motor-vehicle tax rules.

Important Details:

The down payment, loan principal, and GST/HST are different amounts. A down payment is not itself an ITC. Loan principal repayments are not subject to GST/HST, while eligible financing interest may be deductible as a business expense, subject to CRA rules and applicable limits.

Keep the purchase invoice, financing documents, and records supporting the business-use percentage.

Disclaimer: This information is provided by HassanTax Ltd. for general guidance only and is not tax or legal advice. Tax rules, limits, and calculations may change, and the information may be incomplete and may not apply to every situation. The actual treatment depends on your specific circumstances. Always verify the latest CRA requirements or consult a tax accountant or qualified tax professional before filing.

Business Use Ratio Guidelines

Business Use Ratio (%) = (Business Kilometres ÷ Total Annual Kilometres) × 100

Why it matters: This percentage is generally used to determine the business portion of eligible vehicle expenses, such as fuel, repairs, insurance, lease costs, and CCA, when calculating business income on Form T2125. For GST/HST purposes, separate CRA rules may apply when determining the eligible Input Tax Credit (ITC).

Personal-use kilometres are not deductible as business expenses.

Where do I find these numbers?

This form is intended solely for use by HassanTax Ltd. and its clients. It is not an official form, may not apply to every situation, and should not be relied upon as legal or tax advice. Users are responsible for verifying all information before use or filing.

Did you purchase or lease a new vehicle for your rideshare or delivery work this year?

Be sure to upload or send us a copy of your official vehicle purchase invoice or lease agreement. Providing these detailed purchase documents allows your accountant or tax preparer to review capital cost allowance (CCA) rules, apply eligible interest or tax deductions, and help you maximize your legitimate tax savings.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for Gig Drivers

1. Are voluntary tips subject to GST/HST in Canada?

No, voluntary tips are not subject to GST/HST.

In Canada, optional tips provided freely by riders or food delivery customers are not considered taxable supplies for GST/HST sales tax purposes. However, all voluntary tips are still 100% taxable for Income Tax purposes and must be fully reported as business income on your CRA Form T2125.

2. How do I calculate my allowable motor vehicle expenses?

To calculate your deductible motor vehicle expenses, you need to determine your Business Use Ratio (%) based on an accurate mileage log:

Business Use Ratio (%) = (Business Kilometers Driven ÷ Total Annual Kilometers Driven) × 100

You multiply this percentage by your total annual vehicle operating expenses (such as fuel, repairs, maintenance, auto insurance, license fees, and car lease payments).

Important Exception: Expenses such as parking incurred directly for business purposes are generally 100% deductible, rather than scaled by your personal vehicle mileage ratio. CRA (Guide T4002)

3. Are platform referral bonuses and promotions taxable?

Yes. Referral bonuses, promotions, and quest incentives paid to you by platforms like Uber or Lyft are considered taxable business income for Income Tax.

4. Do I need to keep my receipts and tax summaries?

Yes. The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) requires self-employed individuals to retain all official receipts, invoices, mileage logs, and platform annual tax summaries for at least 6 years from the end of the relevant tax year.
